For nearly 20 years Thirsk Community Care volunteers have been giving carers at all stages of life the opportunity to have a much needed break from caring.
Caring for someone can take its toll if you do not get a break, even if it is just to visit the supermarket. This stress can lead to the carer needing medical care and can increase the pressure on GP services.
Volunteers both male and female come from all walks of life. This range of people is vital to allow good matches to families to be made.
The volunteers do not need any qualifications other than to have empathy with the issues that face carers in the current climate, when cuts to services are being made, there are pressures on day care places and respite beds are in high demand.
All volunteers are asked to undertake a Criminal Records Bureau check and personal references are taken up. Induction training covering things like confidentialty, and boundaries to volunteering, are offered and opportunities for further training come up all the time. Volunteers are insured and volunteers are supported in all the work they do.
Quote from a volunteer
“Being a volunteer is very satisfying, meeting families and developing relationships a rewarding way to spend my free time”
If you have some free time even if it is just a couple of hours and you think you could help us in supporting the carers in our community, call in the office for a chat with Gill Burn the co-ordinator, who is always pleased to talk to anyone. We could put you in touch with other volunteers maybe to hear it straight from the horses mouth.
Our office is at 14A market Place, Thirsk ( behind the Yorkshire Bank)
