Investing in VolunteersVcentreInvesting in Volunteers
What is a volunteer?
A volunteer is defined as someone who commits time and energy for the benefit of others, who does so freely, through personal choice and without expectation of financial reward, except for the payment of out of pocket expenses (Department of Health).

23 million people volunteer each year.

For every £1 of public spending spent to support volunteering, volunteers give £30 worth of work.

What is the role of Volunteer Centre
Thirsk?

Our main activities are increasing awareness and promoting voluntary activity in the local community by:

  • VolunteeringProviding information on a wide range of voluntary opportunities available locally, nationally and overseas. We have up-to-date information about the majority of organisations in the Thirsk area which use volunteers, and are the local agents for www.do-it.org.uk, the national database of volunteering opportunities in the UK.
  • Providing an introduction for potential volunteers to particular groups with the option to “find out more” prior to making a final commitment.
  • Supporting local organisations by providing them with introductions to potential volunteers and working with them on issues of voluntary involvement.  For example we can advise on recruiting, retaining and managing volunteers. We can also provide good practice guidelines when working with volunteers. This might include help with forming policies such as Health and Safety or a Training Policy for volunteers working with the organisation.
