Norby Luncheon Club provides a cooked lunch, in a friendly atmosphere, for local pensioners who may otherwise have limited social activity.  This is held at Norby Day Centre, Norby, Thirsk and runs every Monday, except for bank holidays, from 11am to 2.30pm.

Coffee and biscuits are provided on arrival.  After the meal social activities are enjoyed by those present such as dominoes, cards, quizzes or visits from individuals or school groups.

Tea and biscuits are then served.

Norby Luncheon Club has one part time co-ordinator and cook who is well supported by a team of local dedicated volunteers who enjoy being in the company of elderly people.

Who can attend?
People are recommended by Social Services, friends, relatives and neighbours.  A person needs to be able to take care of their own personal needs such as toileting and feeding.  Norby Day Centre is accessible for people in wheelchairs.

Unfortunately, once a person enters full time care, they are unable to attend the Luncheon Club.

What about transport?
This is arranged by Social Services Transport Office.  People who attend the club are picked up either by a social Services bus or by the local Community Mini Bus.  Both these vehicles have ramps for wheelchairs.

The buses pick people up between 10am and 10.45am and then collect from the Day Centre between 2pm and 2.30pm to take people home.

What does it cost?
A charge is made for the cost of the meal and for transport if required.  This is currently £3.00 for the meal and £1.00 for transport.

Investing in Volunteers

Could you be a volunteer for Norby Luncheon Club?

We currently have between 20 and 30 people attending our lunches each week.
Volunteers are vital to the success of the Luncheon Club and undertake a variety of roles including  meeting and greeting, serving, chatting, washing up and taking part in the activities.

Who needs our help?
Norby Luncheon Club helps alleviate social isolation through providing a welcoming environment where good food and good company are served up in equal measure.  The people attending the Luncheon Club are elderly people who may have difficulties getting out and meeting up with friends and neighbours.

How you can help.
The Luncheon Club relies on volunteers.  Without them many people would become socially isolated, lonely, house bound and miss out on a hearty meal.

waiterHow much time would you need to give?
That’s completely up to you.  You give as much or as little time as you are able.  The Luncheon Club runs each Monday so you would have to be available on Mondays to be able to support it’s activities.  You might want to undertake a regular commitment or you might be available for one off requests, you may be able to help for a whole session or for part of a session.  Whatever you decide all help is needed and appreciated.

Do I need any qualifications?
No.  We need volunteers who enjoy meeting others and who like to chat.  Any training needed for individual clients will be provided by Norby Luncheon Club at no cost to the volunteer.

How much will it cost?
Nothing.  We don’t expect our volunteers to be out of pocket.  Volunteers are able to claim mileage and out of pocket expenses.

What else?
You will be given a full induction into Norby Luncheon Club and all our policies and procedures as well as training to carry outSue Lee your role as a volunteer.  Because we work with vulnerable people you may also have to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau check.  If you have a conviction you may be limited in the type of volunteering you could do for us but we should be able tofind other volunteering activities you could undertake. If you are interested in volunteering for Norby Luncheon Club please fill in the ‘I want to Volunteer’ form.
