Do you feel isolated?  Would you like to get out more?  Would you like to make new friends?  If so then the Befriending Scheme is for you.

The Befriending Scheme was set up in July 2003 to address issues of social isolation for people of all ages and backgrounds.  It does this by:

  • Consulting with local people to assess their needs and identify what they really want.
  • Helping individuals to alleviate these needs in diverse and interesting ways with the help of volunteers.
  • Recruiting volunteers to support the activities of the scheme.

Volunteer - June "I've made many friends and it keeps me pretty fit, laughter is a wonderful tonic and we do lots of that on our trips.  My main enjoyment is that I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping others who would not normally get out at all."

Some of the activities run by the Befriending Scheme include:

  • Outings and excursions in the local area.
  • Taster sessions which have included floral design and I.T.
  • Visiting people in their homes and those in residential care.

Area mapSocial meetings are also arranged where people get a chance to put forward their views on how they would like the Befriending Scheme to develop.
The map shows the area covered by Thirsk Befriending Scheme. If you live outside this area but would like to use a sitting service please contact us and we will put you in touch with someone more local.
